Giving our Children Presence

by Danielle Koprowski

How many times have you been spending time with your child and you find yourself thinking about a phone call you need to make or what to make for dinner?

Many of us spend much of our time thinking about the future or the past. Sometimes it is rare for us to be fully present in the current moment. Kids pick up on this and what they really crave is our full presence and attention.

It may seem like our children want our attention all the time, but I think that is often because when we are with them they our only getting our partial attention. When we are able to give kids our full attention, they are more satisfied with the time we spend with them.

Next time you are playing with your child(ren) be fully present. You will find that the time you spend together can be more enjoyable if you let go of everything else for the moment and focus on what you are doing with them. If you find your mind wandering (which is likely) just let go of the thought and come back to being present.

Being fully present with our child(ren) is the best present they will ever receive.
