Thanksgiving Prayer for Children

parent coaching parenting childrenLord,  “We THANK YOU for this place in which we dwell, for the love that unites us, for the peace accorded us this day, for the hope with which we expect the morrow, for the health, the work, the food and the bright skies that make our lives delightful, for our friends and relatives in all parts of earth.” Robert Louis Stevenson

This was a Thanksgiving Day card sent to our family 40 years ago, from a friend.  We’ve adopted it as our daily prayer to be forever reminded of the simple, yet profound sentiments of how not to take our gratitude’s for granted.

Thesaurus’ words explaining gratitude are: thankfulness, appreciation, gratefulness.  Words we can be saying every day to our children“I’m thankful for the person you are choosing to become.”  “I appreciate your thoughtfulness in being there for our family.”  “I’m grateful for who you are as opposed to what you have or what you can do for me.”  These affirmations, coming from the heart, represent a true ‘Thanksgiving’.

Each of us has a story to tell-painful, disappointing, discouraging, seemingly helpless events in our lives that put ‘gratitude’ on the back burner. Understandably, these events might not be easy to overcome but, none-the-less, can over-take our sincere desire to find contentment in ours and our children’s lives.  When we want more than the above poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, we are leaving out acceptance and gratitude as the catalysts for a fulfilling life.

Of course, enjoy all that we have in material wealth, but live our daily lives as though all the material wealth is lost tomorrow. What we will discover is our character, thankfulness, appreciation and our gratitude for seeing the dawn of another day with our children, friends and relatives in ‘all parts of earth.’

My wise, immigrant, Mother would say to me “enjoy what you have but VALUE only those things that cannot be replaced.”

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!  Hugs.
